Biographical / Historical

LaVon Carrol was born on November 3, 1921 in Alpine Utah. She began writing at an early age, and wrote for her school newspaper. She graduated from American Fork High School in 1939, and was unable to continue her education due to the financial constraints of her family. In October of 1940 she married Darrel Carroll, and in 1943 they moved to Ogden, Utah for Darrel’s career. In Ogden, LaVon raised her family, enjoying the opportunities that arose to explore her own interests. She would take her children to the Carnegie Library and spend hours reading. She also discovered her talent for teaching as she began to offer sewing classes at a sewing machine shop. It was through this experience that she was encouraged to teach as a career. In 1955, at the age of 34, she was finally able to begin her college career at Weber State College, earning an AA degree in 1958 as valedictorian of her class. She then went to Utah State University where she earned a BS degree in English literature in 1961, as well as an MS in 1963. She began her teaching career in 1962 when she was offered a teaching position at Weber State College. During her tenure she continued her education with a PhD from the University of Utah in 1972. She never stopped pursuing her love of learning and continued her post-doctoral work at Oxford University in England, the University College Dublin in Ireland, the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and the University of California-Berkeley. As a teacher she was beloved by her students and received many awards and accolades including the Presidential Distinguished Professor Award in 1983, the Aldous Dixon Memorial Award in 1992 and an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Weber State University in 1986. In 1986 she retired from Weber State College after 24 years. A Scholarship within the Telithta E. Lindquist College of Arts & Humanities was established through a bequest from LaVon. LaVon also wrote several books of poetry which she received numerous awards for, including Poet of the Year 1982. She also wrote a Novel. Lavon died December 24, 2013 at the age of 92.
