Ogden Symphony-Ballet Association
Scope and Contents
The Ogden Symphony Ballet Association (OSBA) Collection was donated by the OSBA, which was conceived of in 1949 by Beberly Lund and Ginny Mathei. These women were two Ogden housewives who wanted to bring culture and art to Ogden. They put together a concert that three hundred people attended and it was hailed a huge success. The women decided to continue the concerts and organized a committee within the Welfare League to raise money for the concerts. In 1957 the committee became the Ogden Guild, and eventually included Ballet West performances. In 1982 the committee became the Ogden Symphony Ballet association, and has continued to bring art and culture to Ogden.
The Collection is arranged chronologically according to the symphony seasons which begins in June and runs through May of the following year. There are ten series that make up this collection beginning with Board of Directors. This series contains the names of the board from 1954-1988. Correspondence is next, followed by Events, which include fund raising events and Galas as well as information on Wolf Mountain.
The Financial series is next, and it includes monthly information on the budget beginning with the 1954-1955 season. It also includes a special budget for bringing in guest stars, and a yearly breakdown of costs. The financial series also includes receipts for the symphony that do not fall under the monthly budget. Meeting Minutes is next, and it contains the minutes for the board of directors and executive committee for the symphony. The board of dierectors minutes are missing from 1987-1988 through 1996-1997 and 1998-1999 through 2001-2002. The executive minutes do not begin until the 1983-1984 season, and there are a few gaps between seasons, the biggest being between the 1985-1986 and 2001-2002 season. These minutes are missing or were not sent with the rest of the collection.
The next series is Membership Directory which is a yearly list of donors of the OSBA. Programs, the largest series of the collection follows. This series contains programs from the OSBA, starting in 195- through the 2013-2014 season. It also contains Ballet West, Utah Opera and Utah Symphony programs, as well as programs from symphonies from other states and countries.
Public Relations is next, and it contains mailed brochures, newsletters and press releases. Clipping Files follows and this series has newspaper clippings put together by the OSBA into a scrapbook like form. There are loose clippings that are organized by year, not by season. The last series is Photographs, and it has press photos and snapshots from various events. There are also a few slides and negatives mixed in. At the end of the collection are two oversized clipping file books which have been separated from the main collection with a separation sheet.
