Biographical / Historical
Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MEChA) is a national organization that was founded in 1969. The organization was started at Weber State University in 1982 to get Hispanic Americans involved in politics around campus and Utah. Members of MEChA were able to attend the National MEChA conference held at different colleges around the United States. MEChA would hold various meetings and activities on campus encouraging Hispanic Americans to come and attend and have a voice on campus as well as off. Some of these activities included dance practices in the Shepherd Union, banquets that were hosted with other Hispanic American groups, and meetings trying to recruit new members. Since 2019, MEChA hasn’t been an active group at Weber State University, but the Center for Belonging and Cultural Engagement is working on reactivating the group.
