Biographical / Historical
Dr. Thomas R. Neff completed his B.S. and M.S. in geology in 1960 and 1963 from the University of Utah. He started working at Weber State College in 1968 in the Department of Geology and Geography (now the Department of Geosciences) as Earth science teaching faculty and received his doctorate from Stanford University in 1969. While at Weber he taught, conducted research, wrote research proposals and grants, and completed extensive field studies in Utah and Southwestern U.S. geology. Dr. Neff became a full professor at Weber in 1976. His main areas of research publication were the Oslo Area in Norway and the Buffalo Mountains Pluton in Humboldt county, Nevada. Dr. Neff promoted education of local geology through extensive field trips, internship proposals, and proposals for funding through grant agencies such as the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (now the Department of Health and Human Services) and the National Science Foundation. Dr. Neff was advisor to the geology club in the 1970s. He died near Delta, Utah in 1981 in an automobile accident while conducting research in the field.
