Abstract

This collection contains 5 scrapbooks of newspaper clippings collected by the Ogden City Police Department from 1917 to 1928. The collection was donated to Weber State University by Utah State University Special Collections in June 2005. The articles range from topics such as theft, prohibition, larceny, gambling, murder and draft dodging.

Abstract This collection contains court exhibit evidence and photocopied newspaper clippings concerningthe trial and conviction of Joseph Henry Martin. Martin was tried in the 2 nd District Court forWeber County for assault with a deadly weapon after shooting David Edwards, a Pinkertondetective, while encountering an extortion ring. Abstract

On photograph is written: UH1 12-14-49 (INP Sound photo) Ogden, Utah—Ray Dempsey Gardner, 28—year old slayer of an Ogden babysitter, Shirley Jean Gretzinger, 17, is manacled and returned to jail by Sheriff Mac Wade. Gardner will receive the death sentence Friday since the jury did not recommend leniency.
