The American Federation of Labor (AFL) was a national federation of labor unions in the United States, founded in 1886 by Samuel Gompers. It was formed by craft unions, focusing on skilled workers and collective bargaining over wages, benefits, and working conditions. The AFL later merged with the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) in 1955 to become the AFL-CIO.
