Scope and Contents

The Jesse Holther collection was donated by Margaret Bagley, his niece, in 2015. Jesse Holther was born January 5, 1894 in Ogden, Utah to L.J. and Dora P. Holther. He attended and graduated from Ogden High in 1912, and studied law at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 14, 1917 and served with the Engineers in the A.E.F. in France. On February 20, 1921 he married Helene Marie Grieve in Denver, Colorado whom he met at the University of Michigan. He had a career in Law in Weber County and was in the State Legislature for a while. He died in 1944.

This collection is arranged alphabetically beginning with correspondence. This series is arranged chronologically, and most of the letters Jesse wrote to his mother, some of which was during WWI. Next are newspapers, all of which come from the Standard Examiner. There is one full newspaper that is in poor condition, but it can be viewed electronically, the rest are various clippings.

The Personal series follows, and contains his memoriam, which was written at the court house during a special session. There is the marriage announcement, and a few items from various organizations he was involved in. The series ends with his schooling, which contains report cards from elementary and high school, and various items from his time at the University of Utah and the University of Michigan.

Photographs are next, and it contains photos of him as a child and through his later years. There are group photos, and photos of him and his wife. There are a few items that pertain to his time during WWI, and these have all been placed in the WWI series. There are a few miscellaneous items, and the final series contains artifacts. There is a WWI hat, an American Legion medal and a few other artifacts that cannot be included in the manuscript section.
