Polly Stewart Urban Pioneers Collection
Scope and Contents
This collection contains materials documenting the Urban Pioneers: The Folk Music Revival in
Utah, 1957 – 1966 oral histories project and concert. The project was started by folk artist, Polly
Stewart, and Weber State University student, Jennifer Bott Bateman.
The collection is broken up into the series Correspondence, Grants, Urban Pioneer Concert,
Urban Pioneer Oral Histories, Academic Works, Research, and Audio Music CD-R. Of
particular note is the series on oral histories.
The series Correspondence consists of mostly email correspondence with attachments of
photographs and drafts with a few handwritten letters. Email correspondence documents both the
Urban Pioneers concert and oral histories process, planning, and scheduling of all parties
involved. Correspondence is organized chronologically regardless of subject matter.
The series Grants consists of contracts, agreements, applications and addendums for grants for
both the concert and oral histories interviews and transcriptions. Grant materials range from 2006
– 2012.
The Urban Pioneers Concert series contains documentation of setting up the concert from renting
equipment and space to paying the artists. This series also contains promotional articles,
recordings, and interviews. Concert documentation ranges in date from 2004 – 2012.
The Urban Pioneers Oral Histories series consists of interview tapes and CD-Rs, transcriptions,
notes and questions, and gift and release agreements. Oral histories took place from 2004 – 2009.
Academic Works contain Jennifer Bott Bateman’s dissertation and Polly Stewart’s lecture
materials and conference papers on Chief Skousen. Materials range in date from 2005 – 2012.
The series Research contains all materials related to topics addressed in the oral histories. This
consists of newspaper clippings, photographs, serials, sheet music, set lists, music books, and
pamphlets. Also included are the notes that were taken on the research. The research itself is
broken up into general research and then more prominent subjects including Polly and the Valley
Boys, Utah Phillips, Rosalie Sorrels, and Chief Skousen. Research materials range from ca.
1950s – 2011.
The last series, Audio Music CD-Rs contains music all in CD-R form of artists participating in
the Urban Pioneers concert.
