Scope and Contents

The Margaret Rostkowski Literary Manuscript Collection includes materials related to

Rostkowski’s career as an author and teacher as well as papers from her time as a student from

middle school through college. Items presented in the collection include manuscripts,

correspondence, newspaper clippings, research, serials, and papers. Materials range in date from

1956 – 2002.

Of particular note are the manuscript series pertaining to Rostkowski’s novels After the Dancing

Days, The Best of Friends, and Moon Dancer. Included are notes, research, drafts, galley proofs,

edits, correspondence between editors and publishers, fan mail, awards, newspaper articles, and

reviews. This series also contains study guides for After the Dancing Days created by other

teachers, and fliers and brochures from talks and workshops given by Rostkowski.

The literary manuscripts are broken up into Manuscript Materials, Foreign Publishers, Business

Financial, and Post-Publication Materials. Manuscript materials consist of the pre-production

process from first drafts to F&Gs and cover artwork proofs.

Foreign publishers and business financial contains contracts, correspondence, agreements,

royalty records, and receipts from foreign publishers selling books or translating Rostkowski’s

work into different languages.

Post-publication material includes materials related to the response of Rostkowski’s work.

Including but not limited to reviews, newspaper clippings, fan mail, correspondence, workshop

fliers, and order forms.

The series of school papers consists of English and History papers written by Rostkowski from

1956 – 1981. Papers were written from eighth grade, through high school, and at Middlebury

College, Weber State College, and University of Kansas.

The series of Rostkowski’s teaching career contains 8 th grade English Anthologies from Mt.

Ogden Junior High School bearing notes from students, and teaching packets for 8 th grade

American History.
