Scope and Contents

This collection was donated by the Sisters of St. Benedict's Monastery before they returned to St. Cloud, Minnesota. The Sisters came to Ogden in the late forties to start and run St. Benedict’s Hospital and to open a school of nursing to better help the community they were moving into. The collection contains written histories of the Sisters and St. Benedict's Hospital, as well as published newsletters that were catalogued and placed in Special Collections. This collection is broken up into seven main series: Histories, Mona England, Mount Benedict’s Priory, Ogden Regional Medical Center (ORMC), St. Benedict’s hospital, The School of Nursing, and news clippings.

The Histories series is broken up into general histories and the histories of Sister Estelle. The Mona England series contains materials donated to the hospital by Mona as a head surgical nurse from the last 1960s through the early 1990s. The Mount Benedict’s Priory series contains material dealing with the priory and the monastery where the nuns and priests resided who ran the hospital. The ORMC series is broken up into several sub series with all documents with reference to the new hospital being placed in this series, and those with reference to St. Benedict’s remain within that series. The St. Benedict’s series is broken up into several subseries that deal with the hospital and its different organizations including the Volunteer Auxiliary and the American Red Cross. It also contains photographs and Press Releases dealing with the hospital.

The Scholl of Nursing series makes up the bulk of this collection and contains the withdrawal and transfer records of students, the different oral history projects conducted over the years, as well as information on the alumni association and photographs. The series also contain yearbooks and other ephemera from the school.

The news clipping series contains newspaper clippings that range from the 1940s through the 2000s. It is arranged in subseries and also contains a section for magazine and journal articles. At the end of the collection is an oversized section with oversized items and scrapbooks. Most of the scrapbooks pertain to the hospital, but a few deal with the school of nursing. In box 21 there is a prom photo that pertains to the school of nursing, it is the only one of its kind so it was put with the scrapbooks of St. Benedict’s Hospital around the same time frame .
