Bibliography

This collection consists of photographs, documents, and newspapers about Helen McKay’s life from 1897-1976, with prominent dates being from 1918-1922. She was born as Helen Marie Bonham on November 22, 1897, in Kearney, Nebraska, before moving to Wyoming. Helen was Miss Wyoming of 1920, and became known nationwide as the posterwoman for the Cheyenne Frontier Days. She was sent eastward as Miss Wyoming, acting as the governor’s ambassador to promote the Frontier Days. She visited major cities, from Kansas City to New York City, and brought invitations to the Frontier Days to prominent people, such as Senator Warren G. Harding. She married Johannes C. Krehmke in 1922, in Cheyenne, Wyoming. After 1930, she and her husband had moved to Ogden, Utah, where she was a member of the Benevolent and Patriotic Order of the Does, serving for a time as secretary-treasurer. After Krehmke's death in 1943, Helen was married to Stanley D. McKay from 1944 until his death in 1957. Helen Bonham McKay died of natural causes at the Weber State Memorial Hospital in 1976, at the age of 78.
