Biographical / Historical

The Logistics Program was founded in 1970 as a joint partnership between Weber State College and Hill Air Force Base (HAFB) to initially provide Certificates of Completion to HAFB personnel and interested students and would continue to progress into a bachelor-level program. The Logistics Program was initially in the Division of Continuing Education. As the program expanded it was transferred to the School of Business and Economics and eventually became a fully functional department in that school. In 2005, the department name was changed to Supply Chain Management.

Dix Cloward received his BS, MS, and Ed.D from Utah State University. Dix joined Weber State in 1963 as an associate professor in economics. In 1968, while serving as Assistant Dean of the Division of Continuing Education he was approached by personnel at HAFB to develop a logistics program at Weber State College. In 1970, the program was approved by the Utah Board of Regents. The experience he gained in developing Weber State’s logistics program gave him the opportunity to travel and present his expertise nationally and internationally. Cloward was an active member of the Society of Logistics Engineers (SOLE) and served as chairman of its education committee and scholarship committee. He was instrumental in designing and implementing the Certified Professional Logistics (CPL) program at SOLE, which gave further accreditation to professional logisticians. Dix retired in 1996.
