Biographical or Historical Information
Weberâs student government was established in 1904, fifteen years after the school was started. The student government initially consisted of a president, vice president, and secretary/treasurer. Class and club presidents were given a voice in different committees, but were not officially part of the student government. At the beginning of the 1933-34 school year, the positions of Secretary and Treasurer were made separate positions due to higher enrollment. In 1942, the business manager position was added. These officers were in charge of all facets of student government, including legislative and judicial affairs. In the 1962-1963 school year, when the school changed to a four year institution, the student government was changed by creating the Student Academic Assembly (Legislative Branch) and Supreme Court (Judicial branch). While positionsâ names were changed, the student governmentâs structure did not change significantly again until the 1967-1968 school year, when two new vice president positions were added. Two more vice presidents were added in the 1973-1974 school year. In 1972 the Associated Women Students (AWS), Associated Men Students (AMS), class presidents, and dorm representatives were eliminated as organizations and from the student government and more seats in the Senate were created. The Executive Branch was downsized to three positions in the 1984-1985 school year, and remained that way until the 2006-2007 school year when they increased the number of vice presidents. As of the 2011-2012 school year, there are a president and seven vice presidents in the Executive Branch.
